Your First Tattoo: What to Expect

A tattoo appointment is easier when you know what will happen. Here is the process I use, what I need from you, and where you can speak up along the way.

The short answer

Your idea becomes a plan before it becomes a tattoo.

Start by sharing the subject, placement, approximate size, and any useful references. We will confirm whether the idea is a fit, discuss timing and price, finalize the design and placement, then begin only after you approve the stencil.

Step 01

Send the useful basics

You do not need a perfect design or professional art vocabulary. A clear starting point is enough.

  • Your tattoo idea or main subject
  • The body placement
  • An approximate size in centimetres or inches
  • Black-and-gray or color preference
  • Reference links that show what you like—not artwork to copy exactly
  • Relevant timing, budget, accessibility, or communication needs

I work across microrealism, blackwork, old school, illustrative, fine-line, linework, and Oriental tattoo styles. If your idea falls outside those examples, you can still ask.

Step 02

Confirm fit, timing, and the appointment

I will review the information and follow up with any questions. Size, placement, detail, and complexity all affect the time required. My tattoo rate is $175 per hour.

Deposits

Karmma Tattoo's published shop policy requires a deposit before an appointment is guaranteed. Confirm the current amount and terms with me when booking, and review the studio policy before paying.

Before the appointment, follow the preparation instructions I send you. If something changes—especially your health, the placement, or the concept—tell me before arriving so we can decide the right next step.

Step 03

Review the design and placement

At the studio, we will confirm the design, size, and location on your body. The stencil gives you a chance to see the scale and placement before tattooing starts. Look at it from more than one angle and say what you think.

Adjustments are easier before the tattoo begins. Asking to move or resize the stencil is a normal part of the process.

Step 04

A quiet, focused session

I keep casual conversation minimal while working so I can concentrate and use the appointment time efficiently. There is no pressure to make small talk. You are welcome to listen to music or simply rest.

Quiet does not mean you cannot communicate. Always tell me if you need a break, feel unwell, have a comfort concern, or want to ask about what is happening.

Step 05

Leave with instructions for your tattoo

When the tattoo is finished, I will clean and cover it as appropriate and explain the care instructions for the dressing used. Follow those specific instructions even if they differ from advice you have seen online.

Keep the tattoo aftercare guide available for the general routine, and contact me if you are unsure about your dressing or how the tattoo is settling.

Common first-tattoo questions

Can I bring references?

Yes. References help explain subject, mood, composition, and details you like. They are a starting point for a custom design, not something to reproduce exactly.

Can I change the placement?

Tell me as early as possible. Placement can affect size, composition, timing, and whether the design needs to change.

Do I have to talk throughout the appointment?

No. My sessions are quiet-friendly. You can relax without making conversation, while always speaking up about your comfort or tattoo.
